During a ceremony held Saturday on this occasion in Khan Younis, senior Hamas official Saleh Al-Ruqub said that his Movement has pledged to follow in the steps of its great leaders and remain steadfast in the face of all challenges.

Ruqub highlighted in his speech some of the attributes that characterized Rantisi, and his stands that remained fresh in the minds of the Palestinian people and consolidated a stage full of sacrifices.

In a separate statement on Saturday, Hamas affirmed that the Palestinian resistance will never forsake the Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails no matter what happens and will not rest until all prisoners in Israeli jails enjoy freedom.

“On this great national day, the Palestinian prisoner day, we have to rise to the level of steadfastness enjoyed by our heroes in prison in the face of suppression, abuse and pain and in the face of the Arab letdown and the connivance of some people who sold everything for factional and personal gains,” the statement underscored.

For his part, Dr. Khalil Al-Hayya, a member of Hamas’s political bureau, said that the issue of prisoners is like the other Palestinian issues that need all forms of popular and armed resistance.

Dr. Hayya told a news conference held in Gaza city that the Palestinian people cannot achieve their goals especially the return of refugees to their homeland and the liberation of prisoners without rallying around a unified real resistance program that leads to the removal of the occupation from Palestine.

In the same context, the higher Islamic committee stated that the Palestinian prisoners are prisoners of war and not war criminals because they defend the land of Palestine that has been usurped since the Balfour declaration in 1917.

“The prisoners must be treated humanely and according to international laws and norms which guaranteed freedom and dignity for human beings,” the committee said in a statement issued on the Palestinian prisoner day.

For his part, Palestinian activist in prisoners’ affairs Abdelnasser Farwana told Al-Quds Press on Saturday that Israel’s persistence in its intransigent attitude towards the prisoner swap deal would not force the captors of soldier Gilad Shalit to compromise on their demands.

Farwana noted that this Israeli position could, instead, lead the Palestinian resistance to resort to force and capture more Israeli soldiers and settlers in order to get the Palestinian prisoners released.

GAZA, (PIC)-- Hamas and Islamic Jihad on Saturday stressed that the resistance is their unwavering option to liberate Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails, adding that their issue is part and parcel of the national cause.

This came during a popular ceremony held on the occasion of the Palestinian prisoner day in the Gaza Strip.

In a speech, senior Hamas official Dr. Ismail Radwan highlighted the importance of upholding the option of resistance in order to liberate all prisoners from captivity and urged the captors of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit to insist on their demands and not to succumb to pressures.

Dr. Radwan also reiterated his Movement’s keenness on achieving national reconciliation away from the international quartet’s conditions.

For his part, secretary-general of Islamic Jihad Ramadan Shallah said that the issue of prisoners is part of the nations’ conflict over Palestine and anyone compromising on their freedom is similar to those making concessions on Palestine and occupied Jerusalem.

Shallah also highlighted that the freedom of Palestinian prisoners is part of the liberation of the Islamic holy sites, Jerusalem and all Palestine.

In the same context, the national committee of Jordanian prisoners in Israeli jails organized a sit-in on Saturday on the occasion of the Palestinian prisoner day at the headquarters of professional associations in participation of families of missing persons and detainees.

The participants condemned Israel’s repressive actions against Jordanian and Palestinian prisoners, especially depriving the Jordanian and Gaza families from seeing their sons in prison.

On the same occasion, the Palestinian forum in the Netherlands declared on Saturday its full solidarity with the Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails and its intention to actively participate in events that will be held throughout the European continent in support of prisoners.

Secretary-general of the forum Ameen Abu Rashid said in a press release that the issue of prisoners is still a constant concern to the Palestinian people and their supporters all over the world, highlighting the need for activating their issue on a broader scale.

Abu Rashid noted that the Palestinians in Europe feel that their responsibility toward the prisoners has doubled more than before, adding that the Palestinian institutions and assemblies in Europe decided to highlight the issue of detainees at the Palestinians in Europe conference to be held in Berlin within a few weeks.
