OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, (PIC)-- The Israeli occupation authority (IOA) is expanding its diggings underneath and in the vicinity of the holy Aqsa Mosque in occupied Jerusalem, the Aqsa foundation for endowment and heritage (AFEH) said on Monday.

AFEH said in a statement that the diggings are currently focusing on the western side of the holy site, adding that the IOA was carrying out diggings at various levels in a bid to expand the existing tunnels.

It said that the depth and direction of the excavations could not be absolutely verified because many of those areas are closed before the public, adding, however, that the diggings are taking place along more than 600 meters in the western part of the Aqsa.

The area has turned into a huge workshop in which diggings are taking place day and night, the foundation said, quoting an eyewitness as saying that work at night intensifies.

AFEH said that the Aqsa Mosque and the Old City now exist over a complicated network of tunnels.
