Russia: Hands off Syria!

Via FLC

"Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Friday warned Western nations against intervening in Syria, saying  'This worries us very much,' Lavrov said in comments to reporters during a visit to the Kazakhstan capital Almaty. 'There is a dialogue in progress (between the regime of President Bashar al-Assad and his opponents) and all healthy forces want a ceasefire ... this must not be interrupted.' An ongoing intervention by NATO nations in Libya's civil war has done little to reduce unrest and is possibly prolonging it - a mistake that should not be repeated in Syria, Lavrov said... ... (Moreover,) Russia is attempting to suppress a United Nations report that says Iran has been breaking a U.N. arms embargo by shipping weapons to Syria, Western diplomats said Thursday. "It's obviously an attempt to protect (Syrian President) Assad" who is coming under increasing international pressure over his violent crackdown on anti-government protesters, another council diplomat said. ... Diplomats said Russia offered a procedural justification for objecting to the publication of the report -- it should first be discussed by the Security Council's Iran sanctions committee before being released to the public. "Eventually they'll have to give in but we don't know how long it will take," a diplomat said."
