Assad: Crisis Still at the Beginning, Obama Forced to Seek Calm
Local Editor
The Syrian President Bashar al-Assad expressed beliefs Tuesday that the Syrian crisis is still in the beginning, pointing out that the international situation is being positively developed, and that the Obama administration will be forced to look for calm by next summer, due to the obligations imposed by the U.S. election.
“This enhances its (US) cooperation with Moscow to have a share in solving the crisis in Syria,” Lebanese daily Al-Akhbar quoted on Wednesday president Assad as saying in a special meeting with one of the Syrian local opposition figures in Damascus.
During the meeting, Assad noted that regardless the positions of Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, the international stance is better now, stating that he had not decided yet to respond to the request presented by the Syrian parliament asking to postpone the parliamentary elections for technical reasons, which are expected to be held in the seventh of next May.
However, he seemed determined to conduct elections on schedule, but will be held in next summer should he agreed on the postponement, Al-Akhbar reported.
According to the daily, Assad declared he believed in finding multi-party regime in Syria, and that if Baath Party wanted to stay in the political arena, it has to work between people and compete to ensure its political existence.
He also noted that he is looking forward to produce a political front - more influencing on the path of building the new political future of Syria, than that of the current national front.
On the Lebanese-Syrian relations, Assad explained that Damascus will deal with the Lebanese forces according to its own terms, implying that the interests of Syria will be took into consideration in these relationships, and that immediately after the parliamentary elections in Syria, Damascus will return to pay attention to the Lebanese-Syrian relations in accordance with new standards.
