In a first visit of its kind by an Iranian president since 1979 Islamic
revolution, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived in Egypt on Tuesday hoping to improve
bilateral ties. Egypt's President Mohammad Mursi welcomed Ahmadinejad at Cairo airport as he disembarked from the plane. In an interview on Monday with Lebanese channel Al-Mayadeen, Ahmadinejad said that the Israeli attack in Syria is the result of Zionist “weakness.” He voiced his aspirations to visit the Gaza Strip and pray in Al-Quds (Jerusalem), adding that there is no separation between Palestinian factions for Iran, and that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas is “always welcome” in Tehran. The Iranian president stated that Iran is always ready to assist the Palestinian people. He also reiterated his country’s position on the Syria crisis, stressing the solution of the Syrian crisis and the fate of President Bashar Al-Assad should be decided by the Syrian people. During his three-day visit, Ahmadinejad will attend an Organization of Islamic Cooperation conference in Cairo as well as meet with Egyptian officials and politicians, the official IRNA news agency reported. "I will try to pave the ground for developing cooperation between Iran and Egypt," Ahmadinejad told reporters before leaving Tehran. Without elaborating, he said the visit would "definitely influence the bilateral ties" between Tehran and Cairo. "If Tehran and Cairo see more eye to eye on regional and international issues, many (issues) will change," Ahmadinejad was quoted by IRNA as saying. |

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has called for a strong alliance
between Iran and Egypt in the region in a meeting Tuesday in Cairo with
President Mohammad Mursi, saying it would drive away any threats by enemies. “If Iran and Egypt closed ranks, international enemies of humanity could not inflict any harm upon our nations,” Ahmadinejad said on the sidelines of the 12th summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Cairo. “The Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to increase relations with Egypt in all sectors without any restrictions. The Iranian nation opens up its arms and the way for the development and progress of the Egyptian nation,” he added. “From a historical standpoint, in case Iran and Egypt stay together, both will emerge winners and that would benefit not only the two nations, but also the entire region,” said Ahmadinejad. The Iranian president, who’s the first Iranian president to visit Egypt since three decades, noted that Iran and Egypt need to coordinate their positions and settle the ongoing crisis in Syria. He also stated that Tehran and Cairo would be able to contribute to finding a resolution to the Palestinian issue. Mursi, for his part, underscored the need for broader cooperation between Iran and Egypt, saying Tehran-Cairo relations are significant and influential both in the region and in the world. He called for cooperation between Iran and Egypt to find a solution to the spiraling crisis in Syria. “I believe that the Syrian problem could not be resolved without Iran and Iran’s efforts in this regard are prioritized,” Mursi added. “...We have no doubt that Iran is sincerely endeavoring to resolve the problems in Syria and other nations. Hence, we stress cooperation with Iran in this field,” he added. “Iran and Egypt can expand their cooperation in different sectors and the world will definitely witness a new form of Iran-Egypt cooperation. Iran and Egypt have always sought peace, progress and security because we believe that our nations are entitled to progress,” the Egyptian leader said. In a meeting with the editors-in-chief of Egyptian media in Cairo later in the night, Ahmadinejad said Iran will study the US proposal for direct talks provided that Washington makes positive changes in its behavior. “Remarks by US officials are new and positive and we hope that positive changes are made in their behavior too. If we witness positive changes in their behavior, then we will study it (the proposal) with a positive attitude,” Ahmadinejad said. His comments came in response to a question about US Vice President Joe Biden’s offer of direct talks with the Islamic Republic. Speaking at the 49th annual Munich Security Conference in Germany on February 2, Biden said Washington was ready to hold direct talks with Iran over the country’s nuclear energy program. |

''The Syrian people have the right to choose their own representatives through free elections,'' Ahmadinejad said, adding ''This cannot be achieved through war and conflict, but through understanding,'' he added.
The Iranian president said ''A group of Syrian opposition figures has previously come to Iran and we tried to get them to reach understanding for holding free elections, since we see that war brings about destruction, killing and massacres.''
''Enough with the killing by the two sides, ''Ahmadinejad said, indicating that ''Understanding is in everyone's interest to form their government on their own, which has a regional dimension.''
''I believe that were conflicts to morph into regional ones, the fallout will soon reach other countries,'' the Iranian president added.
Ahmadinejad said that the situation in Syria will affect neighboring countries, including the Palestinian cause, indicating that any progress has to be made through national understanding or free elections.
"Some countries come up with wrong analyses in regards to the circumstances in the region, and find that it is in their interests to stir up chaos," said Ahmadinejad, stressing the importance that these countries utilize their potential in rebuilding, not wars.
Larijani: Destabilizing Syria Serves Western Powers, Israel
Speaker of Iran's Shura Council, Ali Larijani said that destabilizing Syria serves the Western powers and the Zionist entity.
Al-Alam TV Channel said that Larijani's comments came during phone calls that tackled the events in Syria with Speaker of Oman's Majlis Al- Shura (Shura Council) Khalid bin Hilal Al Mawali, Speaker of the Kuwaiti National Assembly (Majlis Al Umma), Ali Fahd Al Rashid, and the Jordanian Senate Chairman, Taher Al Masri.
They condemned the Israeli aggression on a scientific research center in Damascus countryside, stressing support to Syria in the face of Israeli aggressions.
''The Zionist entity is the enemy of the Muslim world, and this entity should not be allowed to take advantage of the current situation in Syria to push ahead with its hostile policies against Muslim countries,'' Larijani said.
Larijani indicated that Muslim countries stand united in defense of the Palestinian people.
