GAZA, (PIC)-- Hamas and Islamic Jihad said that the speech made by Mahmoud Abbas last night was full of contradictory and incorrect information and was an attempt by him to evade his direct responsibility for the crime he committed against Goldstone’s report.

In a press statement to the Palestinian information center (PIC), Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said that Abbas’s allegations about the absence of quorum needed for supporting the report were false and unacceptable because there were at least 33 countries out of 47 which were ready to vote in favor of the report.

Abu Zuhri added that Abbas’s remarks do not serve the atmosphere of reconciliation, noting that the Palestinian people were expecting an apology from Abbas for his position against Goldstone’s report.

The spokesman pointed out that Abbas’s direct responsibility for what happened to the report were confirmed by many international human rights organizations, UN officials, and Palestinian factions including Fatah itself.

In the same context, Dr. Ahmed Bahar, the first deputy speaker of the Palestinian legislative council (PLC), said Sunday that Abbas’s speech was an attempt to mislead the public opinion and reflected his persistence in his treacherous policy.

Dr. Bahar underlined that Abbas gave justifications and made contradictory and unconvincing remarks instead of apologizing to the Palestinian people.

He stressed that Abbas’s speech disappointed the hopes of the Palestinian people especially Gaza victims and reflected persistence in covering up the Israeli war crimes committed against Palestinian civilians.

For his part, spokesman for Islamic Jihad Dawoud Shihab stated in a statement to Al-Quds satellite channel that Abbas’s attempts to justify his position against Goldstone’s report were in disrespect for the Palestinian people, stressing that Abbas was supposed to apologize to his people.

Spokesman Shihab added that Abbas was trying to absorb the popular anger, but his speech worsened the situation in the Palestinian arena.

The spokesman noted that Abbas knows that his position is not condemned only by Hamas, but by many Palestinian and international parties and all see that there was no convincing justification for the withdrawal of the report.

The spokesman also refuted Abbas’s allegation that the decision of postponement was taken after consultations with Arabs, saying that Egyptian foreign minister Ahmed Abu Al-Gheit had stated that Abbas did not consult Egypt and if he did, he would be advised not to act against Goldstone’s report.

“If the Egyptians are Abbas’s friends, why have not they been consulted? And who are the Arab groups that have been consulted?’’ he questioned.

For his part, MP Mushir Al-Masri, the secretary-general of Hamas parliamentary bloc, said in a press statement to the PIC that the only option and gateway to repentance available to Abbas in order to atone for his position against Goldstone’s report is to apologize to the Palestinian people and step down from all his leadership positions.

Masri added that what the Palestinian Authority (PA) did at the UN human rights council in Geneva is clear evidence that Abbas is conspiring with the Israeli occupation against the Palestinian people.

For his part, Dr. Mahmoud Al-Zahhar, a member of Hamas political bureau, stated Sunday that Abbas is trying to convince everyone that he was not the only one who was responsible for delaying Goldstone’s report, affirming that Abbas is living in a state of illusion.

Dr. Zahhar said that Abbas has illusions that there is a coup against him, while he was the one who overthrew the results of the elections and encouraged the Israeli occupation to escalate its crimes against the Palestinian people.
