RAMALLAH, (PIC)-- The Israeli occupation authority (IOA) has been depriving five Palestinian villages west of Ramallah city of drinking and irrigation water for almost five months, Fathia Al-Reemawi, the chairwoman of the Bani Zeid villages, said.

Reemawi said in a press statement on Saturday that almost 12,000 people were suffering from acute shortage of water supplies.

She noted that villagers in Beit Reema, Deir Ghassana, Kufr Ein, Qarawat Bani Zeid and Nabi Saleh, were paying dearly for obtaining water from other sources.

The chairwoman said that the crisis started last May when the Israeli Mekorot water company stopped pumping water to the villages for long periods as a prelude for completely stopping the supply of water to Palestinians in the area.

She charged that the IOA was exercising one of the most brutal forms of collective punishment against the Palestinians in this area, noting that her council repeatedly complained to the concerned authorities of the water shortage, which almost totally destroyed the agricultural and animals sectors, but to no avail.
