Sleiman in Army Day: Insuring Stability Responsibility of All Lebanese
01/08/2010 Lebanese President Michel Sleiman called on all politicians to avoid tensions n the country, saying that ensuring stability in the country is the responsibility of all Lebanese.
During Army Day ceremony in the Beirut suburb of Fayyadieh, Sleiman said that Lebanon managed to beat Israel in the 2006 July War through the unity of its people, army and Resistance.
He added that Lebanon is still committed to the 1701 decree, calling for the cooperation between the army and the International forces in the south, UNIFIL.
“Lebanon has been keen to [protect] UNIFIL troops ever since they were formed. Coordination between UNIFIL and the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) should continue,” Sleiman said.
The President also praised the Arabic role in Lebanon through the Arab leaders' visits to the country in these few days.
“Qatari Emir [Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani] worked with Arab leaders, including Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdel Aziz and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to support Lebanon.”
Both the Qatari Emir and the Syrian President attend the ceremony.
“Lebanon will keep on defending the rights of the Palestinians and their cause. We will also maintain our refusal of the naturalization of Palestinians in Lebanon,” he added.
Sleiman also said that Lebanon should set an electoral law that grants Lebanese living abroad the right to vote from their countries of residence.
