Vote held signals Popular Front will freeze PLO membership

RAMALLAH, (PIC)-- The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine has set its sights on freezing its membership in the Palestine Liberation Organization over what it called violations in the organization’s work, and non-implementation of the Cairo Agreement on reforming it, Palestinian sources revealed Saturday.

One of the Front's leaders Zaher Shishteri said: “A vote was held over the decision to suspend the Front’s membership in the PLO, the result will be announced tomorrow.”

He added that discussions between members home, abroad, and inside Israeli jails held prior to the vote suggest the Front will indefinitely freeze its membership.

The Front leader said the decision was based on the move by executive members of the PLO topped by Palestinian de facto president Mahmoud Abbas to go into direct peace talks against the decision of the PLO’s central committee.

They said that leaders in Ramallah are alone in their crucial decisions for the Palestinian people that go against national interests, in light of conditions Israel has set in the talks.

Shishteri stressed that one of the most key causes of the freeze is the PLO’s failure to implement the Cairo Agreement, which he said should have been implemented before Palestinian division occurred.

The Front called on the media to cover Monday’s press conference wherein its membership in the PLO and position on the current peace talks with Israel will be announced.
