Hamas affiliates tortured while held by PA militia
[ 14/09/2010 - 10:47 AM ] AL-KHALIL, (PIC)-- Prisoners released from Palestinian Authority security militia jails in Al-Khalil say a number of detainees were tortured while being held.
Sources told the PIC that the PA militia brutally tortured three detainees from Al-Khalil until their release during the holidays, and identified them as Mohammed al-Atrash, Iyad al-Juaba, and Mohammed Abu Hadeed.
The three prisoners are former POWs and were held by the PA militia and tortured on previous occasions over charges of being active in Hamas.
Hamas says hundreds of its affiliates held in PA prisons have been tortured and dozens taken to hospitals and medical service centers due to deteriorating health conditions.
The PA militia arrested 65 Hamas supporters and leaders, most of them former POWs, over the past 24 hours in its ongoing arrest campaign in the West Bank.
According to local sources on Tuesday, most of the detainees were from Al-Khalil.
In a related development, sources told the PIC that the PA militia has cancelled all vacations for its intelligence and security officials during the Eid al-Fitr holiday under a state of alert to prepare for an extensive security campaign against Hamas affiliates in the West Bank.
Instructions to cancel all routine vacations starting Sept. 15 along with heavy security and night patrols throughout the West Bank are part of a security campaign launched against Hamas members since the month’s opening.
The PA militia began yesterday to arrest dozens of Hamas affiliates who were released during the Eid al-Fitr holidays as the militia prepares to carry out new and extensive arrest operations starting tomorrow, the sources confirmed.
