Protests continue in London after Salah arrest

LONDON, (PIC)-- Protests continue in the United Kingdom as Sheikh Raed Salah, leader of the Islamic Movement in Israel, is still being held at the Bedford immigration prison to the north of London. The Palestinian leader has challenged a deportation order at the backdrop of allegations of anti-Semitism.

The Palestinian Forum in Britain, which invited the sheikh to the UK to participate in the Palestine Day events, and pro-Palestinian activists staged a sit-in outside of the prison where Salah is staying demanding Salah’s release. The protest began noon 4 July.

A silent sit-in was organized at 5pm the same day opposite the British government headquarters at 10 Downing Street.

PFB public relations official Zahir Beirawi said the government has reversed its ban on lawyer visits and has contacted parties defending the sheikh and allowed them to visit him.

He added that the court will consider on Wednesday a request to release Salah on bail.

Also on Monday, hundreds rallied outside the British embassy in the Turkish capital Istanbul demanding Salah’s release.

“Sheikh Raed Salah was invited to London to lecture in a conference and was not subject to problems when issued an entry visa to London. However, British police detained him at his hotel room under the pretext of being on a travel ban list,” said one activist Radwan Kaya.

He added that the move came after pressure form the Zionist lobby in England as Salah joined pro-Palestinian activities there.
