Abbas opposed to lifting Gaza naval blockade
[ 13/06/2010 - 11:09 AM ]
WASHINGTON, (PIC)-- Mahmoud Abbas, the PA chief whose term in office expired last year, told American president Barack Obama that he opposed lifting the Israeli naval blockade on the Gaza Strip.
Hebrew daily Ha'aretz said on Sunday, quoting European diplomatic sources, that Abbas said that such a step would bolster Hamas, which is currently the de facto ruler of the Strip.
He said that such a step was not warranted at present, the paper said, adding, "Abbas told Obama that steps easing the blockade should be taken with care and undertaken gradually so it will not be construed as a victory for Hamas."
In the meantime, Abbas's loyal militias rounded up four supporters of Hamas in the West Bank, local sources said on Sunday.
They said that three were taken from Nablus including a father and his son and a fourth from Al-Khalil village of Yatta.
