Abbas affirms: No lifting of siege before reconciliation
[ 14/06/2010 - 06:10 PM ]
RAMALLAH, (PIC)-- Mahmoud Abbas, who is still retaining power in Ramallah despite end of his tenure as PA chief, renewed his objection to lift the siege on Gaza.
He said in an interview with Palestinian daily Al-Ayam published in Ramallah on Monday that ending the siege should be preceded by reconciliation between his Fatah faction and Hamas and that the (illegitimate) government of Salam Fayyad should be party to any such measure.
Breaking the siege on the part of Israel and the world community should be through the Fayyad government, describing it as the "legitimate representative of the Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip".
He advocated returning to the 2005 agreement on administering Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt, adding that returning presidential guards to the terminal hinges on forging reconciliation.
