DAMASCUS, (PIC)-- Ezzat Al-Resheq, a member of Hamas political bureau, said Sunday that his Movement insisted on postponing the reconciliation agreement because it cannot turn its back on the popular and official outrage caused by Abbas-gate.

In a press statement to the Palestinian information center (PIC), Resheq said that the meetings with Egyptian officials in Cairo focused on the political scandal caused by Abbas’s position regarding Goldstone’s report and its reflections on the Palestinian reconciliation.

He pointed out that joint ideas were suggested by Hamas delegation and the Egyptians to overcome this problem, adding that his Movement would remain in touch with the Egyptians in order to agree on a new date.

The Hamas official expressed his Movement’s concern about the future of the national reconciliation in light of the mentality of Abbas and his aides who consider themselves above the national consensus and believe they can tamper with the fate of the Palestinian people and their cause.

For his part, Palestinian writer and political analyst Faraj Shalhoub said during an interview conducted by the PIC that Abbas took the decision to postpone the vote on Goldstone’s report and committed a sin with open eyes and without hesitation.

Shalhoub stated that the condemnation of Abbas, for the first time, widely and internationally by many official and popular parties made the scandal resounding and unjustifiable.

“It is not appropriate at all for Hamas to sign a reconciliation agreement with Abbas at the end of the month, and if it did, it would be like someone who threw a lifeline to him in order to survive his unforgivable scandal; it also would give him a service like the one he provided for the Zionist government,” the writer underlined.

He also stressed the need to corner Abbas and demand him to resign and pay for his national crime in order to prevent anyone from betraying the Palestinian people, adding that the timing is perfect to weaken and delegitimize Abbas.
