Mishaal: Abbas's statement attempts to alter facts
[ 25/04/2010 - 04:36 PM ]
DAMASCUS, (PIC)-- Political bureau chairman of Hamas Khaled Mishaal on Saturday described the statements by Mahmoud Abbas, the former PA chief, as an attempt to alter facts.
Abbas in a speech on Saturday said that he was adamant on the two-state solution for the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, adding that Mishaal had accepted that solution in a conversation with an Arab official.
Mishaal told Al-Jazeera TV network that he never said such a thing to any official, explaining that the official, who was not identified, headed to Cairo and telephoned Mishaal from there saying that Egypt was ready to introduce Hamas's amendments on its paper for national reconciliation on condition that Hamas would accept the two-state solution, a Palestinian state on 1967 occupied Palestinian lands, and the Arab peace initiative.
The Hamas leader said that he told the official of his acceptance to a Palestinian state on 1967 borders that should be coupled with return of refugees and with full sovereignty, but rejected the two-state solution because it meant a recognition of occupation of the rest of palestine.
Mishaal said that he also expressed reservations on the Arab peace initiative because it recognizes Israel but would not stand in its way.
