Hamas: All governments formed by Fatah "unconstitutional"
[ 15/02/2011 - 03:49 PM ]
GAZA, (PIC)-- The Hamas Movement said that the successive governments that were formed by Fatah faction in the West Bank headed by Salam Fayyad and any new cabinet are unconstitutional and part of the coup against the true representatives of the Palestinian people.
In a press release on Tuesday, Hamas stressed its belief in the elections as a means for the peaceful transfer of power, but it considered the call for elections by the Palestinian authority and its liberation organization known as PLO "illegal" because it was made by illegitimate institutions.
It added that the intended elections to be held in the West Bank and the new de facto government to be formed by Fayyad are attempts to escape the successive changes taking place in the region and the security and political scandals exposed recently by Al-Jazeera satellite channel.
The Movement also affirmed its belief that the new moves made by the PA and the PLO were aimed at making de facto president Mahmoud Abbas and his authority appear before the Palestinian and international public opinion as unaffected by the regional developments and Al-Jazeera leaks, and still taking initiatives.
Dweik: Elections not legitimate, deepen division

AL-KHALIL, (PIC)-- Speaker of the Palestinian legislative council Dr. Aziz Dweik has said that the legislative and presidential elections called for by de facto president Mahmoud Abbas would only deepen the rift between Hamas and Fatah.
Dweik, speaking in an interview with Al-Quds satellite channel on Monday night, said that such elections should take place in accordance with national consensus, describing the Abbas call as "illegitimate".
The speaker expressed readiness to accompany Abbas, who is also Fatah leader, on a visit to Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip to furnish the way before ending division, make direct contacts with Hamas, and get acquainted with the conditions in Gaza, which has been under tight siege for four years.
MP Khreisheh urges Abbas to invite PLC to convene rather than hold elections
[ 15/02/2011 - 12:08 PM ]
RAMALLAH, (PIC)-- Second deputy speaker of the Palestinian legislative council (PLC) Hasan Khreisheh called on de facto president Mahmoud Abbas to invite the parliament to convene again in accordance with the Palestinian law in order for the lawmakers to contribute to the national reconciliation.
"What is required today is not to call for new parliamentary and presidential elections in the presence of division and without a consensus, but for a new parliamentary round giving the PLC lawmakers a chance to contribute to the inter-Palestinian reconciliation away from external pressures which were impeding this reconciliation, especially the Arab pressures," Khreisheh said in a press release on Monday.
The lawmaker underscored that the Palestinian liberation organization (PLO) knows that the opportunity is now favorable, after the success of the Egyptian revolution, to achieve the national reconciliation apart from the negative Arab pressures.
In this regard, the popular front for the liberation of Palestine (PFLP) stated that the reassignment of Salam Fayyad to form a new government in the West Bank would change nothing of the current national crisis.
The PFLP in a statement on Monday called for moving immediately to achieve a national consensus on rearranging the Palestinian house and prepare for the elections of the national council inside and outside Palestine in order to find a united Palestinian leadership.
For its part, Al-Dameer association for human rights said that transparent and fair elections in the West Bank cannot be held without a national consensus creating a healthy atmosphere in the Palestinian arena.
The Dameer added in a statement posted on its website that the ongoing violations of public freedoms in the West Bank make the holding of fair elections impossible.
