Israeli Cabinet Approves Controversial Loyalty Oath

10/10/2010 The Israeli cabinet on Sunday approved a controversial bill which would compel all new citizens to swear allegiance to Israel as "a Jewish and democratic state," a government statement said.

Twenty-two ministers voted in favor of the proposal, which must still wwin the approval of parliament before becoming law, including most of Likud, Shas and Yisrael Beiteinu. Eight ministers were opposed, five of them from the Labor Party and three of them - Benny Begin, Dan Meridor and Michael Eitan - from Likud.

Israeli daily Haaretz reported that the divided cabinet spent hours deliberating Justice Minister Ya'akov Ne'eman's proposed amendment to the Law of Citizenship. Amid the debate on the matter, Ne'eman himself suggested changing the wording of the draft to apply to Jews and non-Jews alike.

Defense Minister and Labor Party Chairman Ehud Barak said Sunday that he would vote against the proposal unless the cabinet agreed to include in the draft an allusion to Israel's so-called Declaration of Independence.

Neither of those amendments was included in the final draft passed by cabinet.

As the cabinet began its deliberations on Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated his support for the proposal. "The State of Israel is the national state of the Jewish people and it is a democratic state for all its citizenship," he claimed. "Jews and non-Jews enjoy equality and full rights."

"Democracy is the soul of Israel and we cannot do without it. No one can preach democracy or enlightenment to us," Netanyahu said. "Zionism established an exemplary national state, a state that balances between the national needs of our people and the individual rights or every citizen in the country."

"There is no other democracy in the Middle East," he claimed. "There is no other Jewish state in the world. The combination of these two lofty values expresses the foundation of our national life and anyone who would like to join us needs to recognize this," he went on to claim.

Israel adopts law forcing citizens to pledge allegiance to a ‘Jewish state’

JERUSALEM, (PIC)-- The Israeli government voted Sunday afternoon on a draft to amend a law which requires all candidates for Israeli citizenship to give a pledge of allegiance to the “Jewish and democratic state of Israel”.

A report issued by the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that 22 ministers voted in favor of the draft to amend the law, against eight others who opposed.

Israeli efforts to adjust the citizenship law to a law of allegiance to Israel sparked reactions by analysts and politicians, who have confirmed that the decision goes against international norms and laws.

Netanyahu said today that the law of allegiance to Israel reflects the compendium of Zionist principles and nature of the Israeli state.

Netanyahu claimed at the start of the cabinet meeting on Sunday that there is “no other democratic country in the Middle East, and no Jewish state in the world besides Israel.”

Hamas called the decision racist, saying it poses a violation of Palestinian rights and it is intended to erase the country’s Palestinian identity.

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said the amendment on Sunday poses a major threat to the Palestinian presence on the ground and confirms the Israeli government’s defiance of international norms and laws.

“The law serves to establish the idea of a Jewish state, and comes in the same extremist Zionist framework as Lieberman’s idea, which was to eject the Palestinians from their land and houses in preparation for the establishment of this state,” Barhoum added.

“So far no practical steps have been taken from any party in the world against the Zionist aggression, and attitudes are still shy against this threat to the Palestinians,” he went on to say.

Palestinian Legislative Council Secretary-General and legal expert Nafidh Al-Madhoun said: “Amending nationality comes in a purely political framework, and is a Zionist effort to strip the nationality of the land’s original people.”
