OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, (PIC)-- Israeli occupation authorities are discussing “a wide ranging plan” to renovate part of Jerusalem’s Old City that would include opening a new door on the city’s gate for the first time in 112 years, the Israeli Haaretz newpaper reported on Wednesday.
The plan, which was drawn up by Israeli architect David Shriki, is part of a larger plan to renovate the Buraq Wall. It was presented to Israel’s Jerusalem municipality and the Planning and Construction Committee on Tuesday to renovate the Jewish quarter and ease access to the Western Wall Plaza.
Under the plan, a new gate will be erected for entry to a tunnel to be dug under rock under the layers of the city near the Maghariba Gate. The tunnel will lead to a four-level garage under the plaza’s current parking area not far from the Western Wall.
According to the plan, the tunnel and lot will be hewn into rock deep under the city and the archeological layers will be left intact.
The last time a door was placed in the city wall was in 1898 when the Ottoman empire destroyed a part of the wall near the Jaffa Gate to allow the passage of the German Kaiser Wilhelm II, who was visiting the city.
The planning committee in Israel has not yet voted on the plan, but has announced that discussions over it will continue next week.
Abu Sha'ar warns of religious war between Muslims and Jews in O. Jerusalem
GAZA, (PIC)-- Palestinian minister of religious affairs Taleb Abu Sha'ar warned that a devastating war is likely to happen between Muslims and Jews as a result of Israel's escalating Judaization plans in occupied Jerusalem, the latest of which in Al-Buraq wall square, west of the Aqsa Mosque.
In a statement on Wednesday, Abu Sha'ar said that the Israeli occupation authority (IOA) in Jerusalem declared a plan to widen and change many Palestinian places in the old city of Jerusalem, especially the opening of a new door in the wall of the old city.
He noted that this plan is part of wider plans prepared by the IOA to make changes in the area of Al-Buraq wall (known by Israelis as wailing wall).
The minister affirmed that these Israeli plans are aimed at realizing the Zionist dream of Judaizing the entire city of Jerusalem.
"The new door will be the entrance to a tunnel to be dug into the rock under the city and will extend from Prophet David and Maghariba gates to a four-story parking lot located under the current parking lot near Al-Buraq wall," the minister explained, adding that the plan is aimed at facilitating the arrival of Jews to Al-Buraq wall area.
