Fatah leader blames Fayyad for crippled economy

RAMALLAH, (PIC)-- In an attack against the illegitimate government of Salam Fayyad in the West Bank, Fatah leader Bassam Zakarneh accused the government of corruption, wasting public funds, and carrying out intelligence work against trade union officials.
Zakarneh, who is also chairman of the trade union, demanded in a press statement that Fayyad’s government pays compensation for retirees in installments before the end of 2010 as promised by the government, considering the monies which have recently been received from the UAE and the EU.
The monthly payment for retirees is far less than the monthly budget for the Prime Minister’s office, the Fatah leader argued, noting that the Palestinian department of treasury has reached its lowest level in the government’s history, as the PA faces a $400 million deficit and a $800 million debt to the banks, and the debts in the Gaza Strip reach $180 million.
He accused employees in Fayyad’s office of carrying out intelligence work against trade unionists.
Zakarneh said Fayyad’s government must pay the retirement pensions, stop wasting money on trips, bonuses, and exaggerated projects, employ Palestinian experts instead of foreigners, who recently make up 80% of the project’s budget, and not approve a retirement law depriving graduates job opportunities.
